Star to ease Gollan's Oaks disappointment

Thursday 1 June 2017, 3:30pm

Premier Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan is looking to two-year-old She's Our Star to ease the disappointment of missing a Group One run with another of his horses at Doomben.

Gollan had hoped to have Lipstick Lover in Saturday's Group One Queensland Oaks but she was made first emergency when the race was switched to Doomben.

The transfer means only 16 horses can start over 2200m instead of 18 at Eagle Farm over 2400m.

Lipstick Lover was pushed out of the field despite having a better race record than some fillies who made it.

She was third at Eagle Farm on April 29 then won a Sunshine Coast 1600m-handicap beating Oaks rival Sharp Speedo.

Lipstick Lover showed Gollan she was up to Oaks standard when seventh behind Kenedna in The Roses at Doomben two weeks ago.

"It was a very good run because she got held up on the home turn and then got pushed back to the inside where the going was worse," Gollan said.

"The first two came down the centre of the track. But my filly kept on trying and ended up getting beaten about 2-1/2 lengths."

"The Oaks has been her aim since she came to us this campaign. I was happy for the race to be switched to Doomben because it didn't worry me either way."

While Gollan is left to wait for an Oaks scratching he hopes She's Our Star can give him a black-type win for the day in the Listed Bill Carter Stakes (1200m).

She's Our Star has continued to be a trackwork eye-catcher since she ran ninth first-up in the Group Two Champagne Classic three weeks ago.

"They went far too hard in the lead last time and she is back against her own sex here," Gollan said.
