Cliff's Edge impresses with Sandown win

Saturday 27 May 2017, 12:16pm

Leading trainer Darren Weir has some thinking to do after the impressive victory of Cliff's Edge at Sandown.

Cliff's Edge lead throughout to take out the Clanbrooke Racing Handicap (1200m) on Saturday at his second start and Weir has spring aspirations for the colt.

But his dilemma is whether to give the two-year-old a break now or keep him going and take advantage of his winning form.

"He's one that you would have to think about the spring with," Weir said.

"He's got a great racing style and once he goes and develops a bit more he'll be better again.

"He's got the body to grow into a big strong horse.

"I'll have to put a bit of thought into it because it's hard to put them in the paddock when they're winning like that."

Ridden by John Allen, Cliff's Edge was sent out the $4 favourite before scoring by 1-1/4 lengths from Lone Eagle ($5) with Josephine Sea ($4.80) 3-1/2 lengths away third.

Allen, who has been in great form riding feature winners over the jumps and on the flat in the past month, say's Cliff's Edge could be a spring contender.

He said the colt had a nice relaxed racing style and could quicken when asked.

"He's got a great attitude and he should get out to a mile so he might be a Guineas horse in the spring," Allen said.
