Gully Command wins for Lloyd and Currie

Saturday 20 May 2017, 12:44pm

Tough gelding Gully Command will head north chasing the country Cups circuit after his all the way win at Doomben.

Jockey Jeff Lloyd was able to score his fifth win from 12 rides for trainer Ben Currie in the past two months when Gully Command ($3.80) scored in the card-opening Handicap (1615m).

Lloyd has been in superb form with 118 metropolitan winners this season but Currie has also been having a great winter with 10 winners since the carnival started in early April.

"Gully Command is a tough horse and he was well suited by the distance and heavy track," Currie said.

"But it is always a big advantage having Jeff on board; he is a genius."

Currie expects Gully Command to do well after his strong run on Saturday.

"I think he is an ideal horse for the country Cups circuit," he said.

"He will go to Rockhampton for the Cup there in a fortnight and then push on to Mackay and Townsville for their big races."

"I have won the Townsville Cup with Honey Toast but while he is better then Gully Command there isn't that much between them."

Lloyd said Gully Command had a couple of easy sectionals and was able to kick on in the straight.

"The going up against the fence wasn't too bad and he went through it well," Lloyd said.
