Earlier this week a 'Nicks that Click' story on Breednet attracted widespread attention highlighting the growing affinity between top class sires High Chaparral (IRE) and Pentire (GB), whose very best colt Xtravagant stands his debut season at Newhaven Park in Australia this spring.

The story revealed last weekend's Group I SAJC South Australian Derby winner Volatile Mix (3g Pentire x Utopia, by High Chaparral) is bred on the reverse cross that produced Group I ATC Australian Derby winner Shoot Out (3g High Chaparral x Pentamerous, by Pentire), with both horses raced by well known Queensland owner/ breeders Graham and Linda Huddy.

The nick between Pentire and High Chaparral (in any pattern within five generations) has proven a good one with 12 winners from 14 runners bred this way and in addition to Group I winners Shoot Out and Volatile Mix we also see the stakes-winner Silvera, who was interestingly also bred and raced by the Huddy's.

Turning 25 this year, Pentire is now in his twilight years at Rich Hill Stud in New Zealand, but Australian breeders have the chance to access his very best entire son in Xtravagant, a brilliant dual Group I winner of the NZ Two Thousand Guineas (1600m) and Waikato Sprint (1400m).

Given the growing number of broodmare daughters of High Chaparral now heading to stud, Xtravagant is a stallion well worth consideration by their varied owners and has the added attraction of being from a daughter of champion sire Zabeel.

Priced at $16,500, Xtravagant has a pedigree completely free of Danehill blood and is highly compatible with a wide range of mares.
