Extra Zero poised for his 100th race start

Thursday 18 May 2017, 12:16pm

More than eight years after making his racetrack debut, veteran Extra Zero is preparing to step out for his 100th race.

Extra Zero reaches the milestone in Saturday's Archer Hall of Fame Trophy over 2000m at Flemington.

The rising 11-year-old, who has amassed more than $1.6 million prize money, made his debut at Caulfield on April 11, 2009 and notched his first win in the Listed Anzac Day Stakes at Flemington later that month at his second start.

He goes into Saturday having won six races and been placed 32 times. His most recent victory came in a hurdle race at Ballarat in June last year.

Second to Monaco Consul in the 2009 Victoria Derby, Extra Zero almost caused a boilover in the 2015 Group One Australian Cup when beaten by stablemate Spillway in a photo finish as a $101 chance.

"He won a stakes race at two, ran well in all the Classics at three including running second in the Victoria Derby," trainer David Hayes said.

"He's been an amazing horse, really. He's a beauty.

"He has lasted the test of time."
