Williams, Miller earn Hall Of Fame status

Wednesday 17 May 2017, 2:48pm

Five-time Melbourne Cup winning owner Lloyd Williams says he's delighted to be inducted into the Australian Racing Hall Of Fame.

Williams, who was announced as an inductee on Wednesday at the Australian Racing Museum, has spent more than 50 years in racing as an owner while also serving time as a committee member of the Victoria Racing Club.

His first Melbourne Cup victory came with Just A Dash in 1981 while he claimed his fifth last year with Almandin.

While the Melbourne Cup is dear to his heart, Williams has also won other major staying races around Australia including the Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide Cups.

"After a long innings in this industry I'm absolutely delighted to be inducted," Williams said.

"It's a great honour."

Former Perth-based jockey John 'JJ' Miller, who retired from riding in 1990, joins the list of jockeys in the Hall Of Fame after a career spanning more than 40 years.

He joins his 1966 Melbourne Cup winner Galilee in the Hall Of Fame having also ridden the Bart Cummings-trained stayer to win the Caulfield and Sydney Cups in the 1966-67 season.

"It's a great honour but I think more so for my family," Miller said.

While Miller said winning the Melbourne Cup was a highlight, he regards the victory of Ullyatt in the 1986 Perth Cup as his most memorable as it was owned and trained by his wife of 63 years Kay.
