Zamzam back to winning form at Flemington

Saturday 6 May 2017, 5:18pm

After failing to come up during a spring campaign, Zamzam has bounced back to winning form at Flemington.

A promising two-year-old who ran third to Extreme Choice and Flying Artie in the 2016 Blue Diamond Stakes, Zamzam won Saturday's Primacy Handicap with authority.

Ridden by Luke Nolen, Zamzam ($18) showed a good turn of foot at the 400m mark before holding on to record a 1-1/2-length win from Just Hifalutin ($4.80), with Greviste ($10) a half-head away third.

Zamzam was a dual winner as an autumn two-year-old, including a victory at Listed level, and was expected to be one of Lindsay Park's leading three-year-olds last spring.

But the daughter of Redoute's Choice failed to come up and after five runs was turned out for a break.

Longtime Lindsay Park stable foreman Gary Fennessey said the filly looked poor in the coat during the spring and raced accordingly.

"It's taken a long time but the way she's won that it looks like she's back," Fennessey said.

"Sometimes you get mares that only race well at certain times of the season and then you get a mare like Winx that it doesn't matter what season it is."

Fennessey said Zamzam would improve off that victory but was unsure what trainers David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig had in mind for the filly.
