Ranvet Stakes favourite Fiveandahalfstar will go where few latter-day three-year-olds have dared in the weight-for-age race at Rosehill on Saturday.

The horse who left Sydney racing as a restricted grade winner in the spring returns as the top betting pick in a Group One event in which it has been 15 years since a three-year-old has been successful.

But since Gold Guru upset Might And Power in the 1998 edition there have been only four three-year-olds who have been given their chance in the 2000m race.

Ambulance has been the best performed of the quartet with his runner-up finish to Sound Action when a short-priced favourite in 2004.

Trainer Anthony Cummings believes his last-start Australian Cup placegetter is ready to bring his Melbourne Group One form to Sydney, without saying the horse races better in one city than another.

"He was on the way up when he won two races in Sydney before he won the Victoria Derby in the spring so you'd be hard-pressed to say he is one-sided," he said.

Fiveandahalfstar emerged wounded from an epic Australian Cup battle with fellow three-year-old Super Cool but has been given a clean bill of health to continue his autumn campaign.

"Everything is in order with him," Cummings, who trained Zavite to a $101 Ranvet win in 2011, said.

"With the exception of a couple of Kiwis it's not a dissimilar field to the ones he's raced against and I'm sure he'll run well again."

While Cummings expects Fiveandahalfstar to hold his form, Peter Moody is sure last year's winner Manighar can lift on his after a down-the-track return to racing in the Chipping Norton Stakes.

"He's worked super," Moody said. "He can turn it around.

"Whether he turns it around quite enough to win I'm not sure, but certainly enough to be very competitive."

Fiveandahalfstar heads Ranvet betting at $2.80 from New Zealand mare Silent Achiever ($3.80) with Manighar an $8 chance.
