Jockeys to appeal Sandown suspensions

Thursday 6 April 2017, 7:26am

Two of the three jockeys suspended on careless riding charges at Sandown have lodged appeals against the severity of their bans.

Mark Zahra and apprentice Beau Mertens will have their appeals heard by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on Monday after being suspended on Wednesday.

Both riders start their suspensions after commitments on Saturday and have not requested stays of proceedings.

Zahra rides on the second day of The Championships at Randwick on Saturday where his mounts include Harlow Gold in the Australian Oaks and Jessy Belle in the Coolmore Legacy Stakes.

His suspension ends at midnight on April 16 and he hopes to get two days shaved off his sentence to be eligible for Group One rides in the All Aged Stakes and Champagne Stakes at Randwick on April 15.

Mertens rode a double at Sandown on Wednesday which moved him to 48 winners for the season and second on the premiership ladder, six behind Craig Williams.

He was outed for seven meetings on a careless riding charge after winning on Single Note and after riding at Caulfield on Saturday is out until April 16.

It was the apprentice's first suspension since August last year.

Jordan Childs was also suspended on Wednesday, receiving two seven meeting bans for careless riding from the one race to be served concurrently.

After riding in Adelaide on Saturday Childs will be sidelined until April 16.
