International travel on hold for Jameka

Wednesday 5 April 2017, 1:11pm

Jameka has been ruled out of an International campaign as she continues her recovery from travel sickness.

Trainer Ciaron Maher said the mare was making steady progress after being diagnosed with the ailment following her return to Melbourne after winning The BMW at Rosehill on March 25.

"She's improving every day," Maher told RSN927.

"She's over the worst of it but she's still on antibiotics.

"She'll most likely now go to the paddock for a break, get her over it and then most likely see her again in the spring."

Maher was contemplating a trip to Hong Kong at the end of April before heading to the Royal Ascot meeting in June.

"There's plenty of options getting closer to the spring over there (Europe) but definitely Hong Kong is out later this month," Maher said.

"She'll have a break and then we'll see how she comes up."

Maher said he would contact Racing Victoria handicapper Greg Carpenter to get an idea of what weight Jameka may get if she was to defend her Caulfield Cup title in the spring.

Jameka won last year with 52.5kg.

Maher suggested should Jameka receive too much weight and bypass the Caulfield Cup, the Emirates Stakes (2000m) on the final day of the Melbourne Cup carnival could be a target.
