Buoyant first day of Easter Sale

Tuesday 4 April 2017, 5:55pm

Four million dollar lots have been sold on the first day of the final Easter Yearling Sale at the historic Newmarket venue in Sydney.

Auctioneers William Inglis and Son are building a new state-of-the-art complex at Warwick Farm in Sydney's south-west which will be used from next year.

A Redoute's Choice half-sister to Group One winner English topped Tuesday's first session at $1.8 million.

She was bought by Tim Stakemire on behalf of Sheikh Khalifa and will be trained by Tony McEvoy.

"Sheikh Khalifa asked me to give him my best filly at this sale last year," McEvoy said.

"He bought her for me and she turned out to be Roomooz who won her first start. He asked me the same this year and I said this filly.

"Sheikh Khalifa said he wanted his horses with me because of what we were doing with our two-year-olds."

Bloodstock agent James Harron was also active on Tuesday, buying two expensive colts within 15 minutes.

He signed for a colt by Written Tycoon for $1 million before winning a bidding battle at $1.6 million for a colt by I Am Invincible.

"Both fit the mould of the type of colt we are looking to buy into and will go into the stallion partnership and be trained by Peter and Paul Snowden," Harron said.

"The Written Tycoon is from a great farm (Turangga) and we've had success with the stallion through Capitalist with Peter and Paul."

The I Am Invincible colt is the first foal of Captivating Claire, an unraced O'Reilly mare from the immediate family of Octagonal.

"Both colts are speed on speed, precocious families and fit what we are trying to achieve," Harron said.

"This is a buoyant market with lots of lovely horses and they were the two we wanted so we were happy to be strong on them."

The fourth big buy was by Brent Stanley's Cloud 9 Thoroughbred's paid $1.15 million for a Fastnet Rock filly out of Fleur De'here.
