More country TAB meetings for Queensland

Sunday 2 April 2017, 11:00am

Racing Queensland has expanded its TAB coverage of country racing and added three new regional bonus scheme series for the next racing season.

Queensland will have a total of 781 thoroughbred race meetings in 2017-18.

RQ boss Elliot Forbes said authorities were keen to continue to support country racing.

"There will be extra country TAB race days including six at Cairns, two at Gatton and one each at Dalby, Kilcoy, Roma and Warwick," Forbes said

"We are pleased to announce the inaugural Country Racing Series for season 2017-18, a regional state-wide showcase of country racing."

The initial three series are the Roads to Roma, the Outback Showcase and the Race to the Reef which will cover racing areas throughout the state.

Roads to Roma starts on July 1 and concludes four weeks later.

The Outback Showcase begins in April 2018 in Julia Creek and Race to the Reef begins in May 2018.

"The new series, which includes 18 country and regional racing clubs, sees participants competing for prize money of $260,000 with each series highlighted by a $30,000 final," Forbes said.

Tabcorp Holdings and Racing Queensland have signed a deed of understanding in the lead-up to a possible merger with the Tatt's Group wagering arm.

RQ chairman Steve Wilson said Tabcorp had committed to spending more on capital investment in Queensland wagering including retail and on-course facilities.

He said there would also be an increase in technology, sponsorship and marketing.
