Milwaukee dominates Bendigo Guineas

Saturday 1 April 2017, 6:14pm

Just 20 minutes after champion sprinter Chautauqua's breathtaking third TJ Smith Stakes win at Randwick, the same colours have been to the fore in Victoria with Milwaukee winning the Bendigo Guineas.

The Hawkes Racing-trained Chautauqua carries the colours of Rupert Legh who is also in the ownership of the Mike Moroney-trained three-year-old Milwaukee.

Milwaukee ($8) landed his first stakes win in Saturday's Listed 1400m race at Bendigo and in contrast to Chautauqua's brilliant finishing burst to come from well back in the $2.5 million sprint in Sydney, Milwaukee controlled the $150,000 Bendigo Guineas from the front.

The gelding had his rivals chasing around the home turn and they couldn't reel him. He had a 2-1/4 length advantage over Sword Of Light at the finish with Kazio running home for third, another half-head away.

"All intentions were to lead on him and he was probably more ready for a mile (1600m) than a 1400," jockey Patrick Moloney said.

"So from the from the 600 metre mark it was the plan to crank it up and that was the winning move.

"He's one of those horses who just went by the wayside in the spring carnival and didn't measure up, but now he's a bit more seasoned and he's showing the promise that he showed early doors."

Milwaukee won a Wodonga maiden on debut last August and has now won three of his seven starts with Saturday's victory coming after his last-start success at Pakenham.

"He's a horse who I've had a fair bit to do with at Mike's and I think he's just going to keep on evolving as a racehorse as he gets older," Moloney said.
