O'Dea lands first Saturday treble

Saturday 25 March 2017, 5:36pm

Trainer Steve O'Dea can look forward to the winter carnival with confidence after scoring his first city treble on Saturday at Doomben.

O'Dea had a double with winter carnival three-year-old hopefuls Let Me Say This ($4.20) and Candika ($1.70).

He then took the Open (1350m) with consistent mare Beatniks ($5.50), which enjoyed a fast early pace.

All three were to be ridden by Paul Hammersley, who called in sick.

Michael Hellyer had the ride on Let Me Say This, and Damian Browne took the Candika mount.

Jim Byrne, who had been riding Beatniks but took another ride in the race, got back on the mare after his original mount was scratched.

Let Me Say This showed he's a possible Queensland Derby hopeful with a slogging win in the Three-Year-Old (2000m).

"Let Me Say This has shown staying potential and now we know he can handle wet tracks," O'Dea said.

Candika won at 1500m five weeks ago and O'Dea sent the filly to be freshened with a run in the Class 3 (1200m).

"It was only a small field today but she was three deep facing the breeze for much of the race. I am sure that run will tighten her up," O'Dea said.

He will test Candika in the Listed Princess Stakes at Eagle Farm on April 22.

Privlaka ($3.10) is also headed to the winter carnival after winning the Class 6 (1200m) on Saturday.

Privlaka carried the colours worn by Buffering when he won a Group One race in Dubai a year ago.

Trainer Tony Gollan is aiming Sheiswhatsheis ($1.70) for the Toowoomba Cup after she won a Class 6 (1600m).

Gollan won the Cup in 2013 with Bang On and is keen to win his hometown Cup for a second time.
