Matt Hill new caller for Melbourne racing

Wednesday 22 March 2017, 4:49pm

Matt Hill has been appointed Melbourne's premier race caller to replace the retiring Greg Miles.

Hill, 36, has an extensive background in sports broadcasting including several years as the chief Sydney race caller for Sky Racing.

He will start his new role on April 1, with Miles to call his final Melbourne meeting on April 15 at Caulfield.

"I love horse racing and have always wanted to be a race caller," Hill said.

"Being from Melbourne, this has always been the role that meant the most to me.

"From when I was a young lad walking onto Flemington I was always fascinated by the sound of the races and those that called the action.

"To take the baton from Greg Miles, an iconic figure in Australian broadcasting is an honour, a privilege and a rare responsibility.

"This is a lifetime's dream come true and I cannot wait to start."

Racing Victoria's acting chief executive Giles Thompson said there had been great interest in the position.

"While Greg Miles leaves large shoes to fill we are confident that Matt will become a tremendous asset for Victorian racing," Thompson said/

Along with Hill's appointment, Racing.com has elevated existing caller Terry Bailey to the position of senior race caller.

Bailey will be the voice of Friday night racing and take on a role mentoring the race calling team.
