Winning Rosehill debut for William Buick

Saturday 11 March 2017, 1:29pm

Norwegian-born British jockey William Buick made a successful debut at Rosehill for Godolphin, steering French import Spectroscope to an impressive win in the card-opening Schweppes Handicap (1350m).

Buick, who has six rides booked on Coolmore Classic Day, arrived in Australia to replace the injured James Doyle and had no issues acclimatising on Saturday as the four-year-old scored by a length over pre-race favourite Extensible ($2.90).

Bring Luck, a $21 outsider, was 1-1/4 lengths back in third.

Trainer John O'Shea was rapt with his overseas combination.

"The race panned out for him a little. We got on the back of the favourite and William rode him beautifully," he said.

O'Shea said Spectroscope ($3.30) would be back at Rosehill for the Group Three Doncaster Prelude on March 25.

"It's a nice little Group race for him to wet his toe a little bit and see what happens after that," he said.

"If he was to run very well and acquit himself, then we'll give consideration to something after that," he said.

Buick, 28, arrived earlier this month as cover for Doyle, who injured a wrist when he toppled from Pearls in the Triscay Stakes at Randwick on February 13.

Doyle was drafted in to replace New Zealand jockey James McDonald, who was sacked by Godolphin after being suspended for 18-months on a betting charge.

McDonald is scheduled to appeal the severity of the ban at a Racing NSW hearing on Monday.
