Tireless Kudero wins Bert Lillye Memorial

Friday 10 March 2017, 5:40pm

His most recent spell ended last August, though six-year-old warhorse Kudero shows no signs of slowing down.

The Clarry Conners-trained gelding made light work of the 13th race of his preparation as he surged to the line to claim the AJ 'Bert' Lillye Memorial by a length at Kembla Grange on Friday.

"He's been up a while, he's a great little horse," Conners told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

Kudero nailed his 11th win from 54 starts by shading Princefamous and Old Man Sam.

"I don't do too much work with him, he goes out to walk every now and then and pokes around," Conners said.

"He's not a big race horse, but he keeps racing well. He had to travel three-wide but he's a trier."

Conners conceded Kudero, who was ridden by Christian Reith, did benefit from his light weight of 54kg over the 1200m.

"Last start he had 58 and a half. He dropped four and a half kilos. I'm sure that was a big advantage for him," he said.

"The track was a little bit dead too, there were a lot of things in his favour."

Kudero jumped as the third favourite ($5.60) behind Ziggy Willie ($2.60), who finished fourth in the six-strong field.
