Rudy on target for Sydney campaign

Thursday 9 March 2017, 2:32pm

Tough gelding Rudy will resume from a break at Doomben without a barrier trial but trainer Helen Page is confident he is on target to be competitive in the Sydney autumn.

Rudy runs in Saturday's 1350m-Open Handicap, his first start since he finished fourth behind Cylinder Beach in the Bernborough Handicap at Eagle Farm on New Year's Eve.

Page had considered trialling Rudy at the Gold Coast last week but decided he did not need the hit-out.

"Rudy has had a three-week freshen-up at a spelling property and come back in good spirits," Page said.

"I could have trialled him but decided he didn't need it."

Rudy has again been slugged with a big weight on Saturday with 61kg which hasn't pleased Page.

"He has had one dead-heat win in two years. He is paying for being so consistent in his placings and his win in the (2014) Villiers," she said.

"Rudy is getting weighted out of races in Brisbane but he still gets big weights in Sydney."

Rudy will be making his sixth visit to Sydney later this month.

The gelding has been entered for the Group One Doncaster Mile on April 1 but he is well down the list of qualifiers at the moment.

"We might go down for the Doncaster Prelude. If he was to win that we would press on to the Doncaster," Page said.

She has pinpointed the Group Three Japan Racing Association Plate (2000m) at Randwick on April 15 as the main target for Rudy in the autumn.

"Rudy ran in it last year and finished fifth but he probably should have won it," Page said.
