Zipping Classic at Caulfield in 2013

Tuesday 12 March 2013, 3:19pm

The Zipping Classic meeting that traditionally marks the end of the Melbourne spring canrival will be transferred from to Caulfield while the Sandown track is renovated.

The meeting that also features the Sandown Guineas and Sandown Cup is one of several to be affected during the five-month closure from August 28.

According to the Racing Victoria (RV) framework released on Tuesday, 568 race meetings will be conducted in Victoria during the 2013-14 season, eight less than this season with four TAB meetings and four non-TAB fixtures being cut.

There will be 110 metropolitan meetings, 424 country meetings and 34 picnic meetings.

RV's General Manager - Racing, Greg Carpenter, said the reduction had been made with the support of the Australian Trainers Association and the Victorian Jockeys Association.

"The ATA and VJA were supportive of the changes on the basis that the reductions would help to address field size issues, particularly in December, and that the total prizemoney for 2012-13 would not be reduced in 2013-14," Carpenter said.

The four TAB meetings to be cut are all in December including a Moonee Valley Thursday night meeting and a Cranbourne Saturday night meeting.

There will be 31 night meetings during the season with Moonee Valley to host 17 on Friday nights. Cranbourne has 14 night meetings with 12 of them Fridays and two on Saturday.

The Ballarat track is also scheduled to be out of action after the club's Cup meeting in November 2013 until May 2014 for renovation to the course proper.

An overall reshuffling of meetings will result in Sandown hosting three less Wednesday metropolitan meetings.

"Long term the improvement for both Ballarat and Sandown track will be terrific for the industry," Carpenter said.

"We know they've had a lot of racing in the last few years so it's critical that we get them back to exactly where they should be."
