Panya breaks collarbone in Rosehill fall

Saturday 28 January 2017, 2:02pm

Deanne Panya's push for the Sydney apprentice's premiership has been halted with the jockey nursing a broken collarbone and a chin wound after a fall at Rosehill.

The 24-year-old will spend Saturday night in hospital after falling from Sebring Express in the Group Three Widden Stakes at Rosehill.

Further scans are expected to confirm that she has not fractured her larynx.

Panya was attempting to direct Sebring Express away from the running rail at the 250m mark of the race when the horse stumbled.

She lost one of her irons and desperately tried to hang on for another few strides but eventually lost her grip on the rein, falling under the horse and into the rail.

Panya was taken to the nearby Westmead hospital where she was also found to be concussed.

Racing was delayed while a replacement ambulance came to the course for the rest of the meeting.

Leading country rider Rachael Murray was lucky to escape injury after she fell from Vitervo Star at the 800m mark of the Highway Plate.

Murray was shaken but on her feet and walking.
