Snitzel's regal legacy enhanced by Pharoah

Wednesday 11 January 2017, 3:36pm

As Gerald Ryan continues his search for the next Snitzel on the Gold Coast, The Pharoah has enhanced the reputation of the champion sire he once trained.

While Ryan is in Queensland for the Magic Millions race day and yearling sale, three-year-old colt The Pharoah opened his winning account in a maiden over 1250m at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Ryan and the sire's former part-owner Damion Flower last year bought sale-topping Snitzel colt Chauffeur on the Gold Coast and he is set to run in Saturday's $2 million 2YO Classic.

Sent out the $3.60 favourite, The Pharoah held off a late challenge from Dream I Can ($12) with Taciturn ($11) finishing third.

Owner-breeder Ottavio Galleta has also had success with Snitzel's progeny having raced The Pharoah's half-brother Malavio who was a multiple stakes winner.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy said the colt's runner-up finish on debut behind Ebenos at Warwick Farm on December 21 stacked up well for the race.

"My horse was sort of stargazing around a little bit in front but once he got challenged he went again," McEvoy said.

"Once he really switches on I think there's more to come and I think he's open to enjoying a little bit further as well."

The Pharoah brought up an early double for Ryan and McEvoy after they combined to win the first race with three-year-old colt Harper's Choice.
