Waller stable breaks new ground with 2YOs

For a stable with so many dominant strings to its bow, two-year-old features are one domain of racing that Chris Waller is yet to take by storm.

The champion Sydney trainer has plundered 65 Group One races since 2008 and two of those have been won by two-year-olds.

Brothers Pressday (2009) and Press Statement (2015) both won the J J Atkins in Brisbane in June, but there is rarely a rush to prime horses for the Magic Millions or Golden Slipper.

This season there already been a change in the the stable's juvenile output, with Waller training his first and second two-year-old winners before Christmas in the space of one week in October.

Tangled, who is set to make his debut in Saturday's two-year-old race (1200m) at Rosehill, shapes as a traditional Waller juvenile proposition.

Waller says he is a scopey three-year-old type who might find the opposition too quick for him on debut.

"He has done everything right. It's his home track and we want him to have a nice experience," Waller said.

"He could surprise us because he is better than average in terms of where he will end up."

Conversely, stablemate From Within is down to run at Randwick on Boxing Day as she tries to bank some prize money towards a berth in the Magic Millions Classic on the Gold Coast on January 14.

The filly's two barrier trial wins have included a 4-1/4 length romp at Warwick Farm on Monday and a three-length win when eased down at Rosehill on December 6.

"It looks like she's very smart but we haven't let the handbrake off yet," Waller said.

"Hopefully when we do release the brakes she can quicken."

In both trials From Within has shot out of the gates and hit the front.

"The only negative about horses that jump and run is you don't really know how good they are until under full pressure," Waller said.

From Within was a $360,000 yearling at this year's Gold Coast sale and is raced by Mark Sowerby and Raffles Racing.

With public holiday prize money on offer, From Within may have to run again to qualify for the Magic Millions on January 14.
