Monday 5 December 2016, 4:56pm

The Pakenham Cup meeting run with metropolitan class races has been hailed a success by Racing Victoria.

The early wagering figures from all operators on Saturday's meeting was $28.9 million, an increase of 1.2 per cent on the corresponding meeting at Sandown last year.

Turnover on Saturday's Pakenham Cup of $4.8 million was up significantly on last year's total of $1.88 million when the meeting was held on a Sunday.

The Pakenham Racing Club reported a crowd in excess of 8000 attended the meeting.

Outgoing RV chief executive Bernard Saundry said the strong wagering figures and attendance showed having the meeting on a Saturday was a success.

"On initial inspection of the data, we are delighted with how Saturday's Pakenham Cup meeting performed, both in terms of wagering and attendance," Saundry said.

"The Pakenham Racing Club should be congratulated on hosting a fabulous raceday and I think we can safely say that the meeting will quickly become a highlight on the Victorian thoroughbred racing calendar."
