Mihany breaks record in Pakenham victory

Saturday 3 December 2016, 4:42pm

Iron horse Mihany has returned to winning form with a record-breaking win at Pakenham.

The Lindsay Park trained galloper lowered the 1600m track record when successful in Saturday's David Bourke Memorial Handicap.

Ridden by apprentice Regan Bayliss, Mihany was sent out the $2.50 favourite before scoring by 3-1/4 lengths from Kenjorwood ($3.90) with Petrology ($6) a long neck away third.

The victory brought up a race-to-race double for Lindsay Park after Snitzson scored in the Wise Choice Catering Handicap.

Senior Lindsay Park trainer David Hayes described Mihany as an iron horse following the win.

"He's been in work for something like 450 days and he's won three races for the new ownership," Hayes said.

Mihany began his campaign in October last year and apart from a nine week break in August, where he changed ownership, has been in work ever since.

Hayes said Mihany, a $600,000 yearling buy, was purchased by his current owners for $110,000.

"He was owned by Shadwell who move on a few horses for their next yearling intake," Hayes said.

"I encourage them not to but understand they have to and that's why they are good to buy off.

"The new owners have done very well."

Mihany will now head to the Lord Stakes (1700m) at Caulfield on December 26.

"Then there might be a freshen up but I hate turning out in-form older horses," Hayes said.

"My theory on Mihany is if he runs a bad race I give him one more chance and he always bounces back.

"We'll run in the Lord and if he runs poorly, we may freshen up."
