Flying Snitzel in search of a dry track

Monday 4 March 2013, 5:36pm

Flying Snitzel belies the notion her sire produces wet track specialists and will head to Melbourne on Saturday to avoid any dampness in Sydney.

The filly was therefore scratched from last weekend's Millie Fox Stakes at Rosehill with the Group Two Kewney Stakes (1400m) at Flemington the revised target.

Gerald Ryan trained her sire Snitzel whose only heavy track experience was a winning one in the 2006 Oakleigh Plate.

Ryan has since prepared many of Snitzel's progeny, some of which are adept in the same conditions but Flying Snitzel is not among them.

"Some of them handle it, some of them don't," Ryan said.

"We'll go to Melbourne. I think she will be suited by Flemington."

The top rated filly among the 21 nominations is Group One winner Norzita who returned with a stylish win in the Listed Typhoon Tracy at Moonee Valley on February 22.

That was her first start since she gave Bart Cummings his 265th Group One win in the Flight Stakes last spring in which Flying Snitzel was sixth.

Norzita will return to Sydney after the Kewney to run in the Coolmore Classic and Queen Of The Turf during the autumn carnival.

Flying Snitzel's targets will be assessed after the Kewney but Ryan believes she can get up over ground.

Snitzel was never tried beyond 1400 metres but Ryan said there was no reason to doubt his sons and daughters over a distance.

"It all boils down to the horse," he said.

Flying Snitzel has a win over Victorian Oaks winner Dear Demi to her credit as a two-year-old and although her spring campaign didn't produce the hoped-for results, Ryan said she could make amends this autumn.

She finished fifth first-up in the Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) won by Bennetta who headlines the Group Two Surround Stakes at Rosehill along with Dear Demi.
