David Hayes rings up 50th Cup carnival win

Thursday 3 November 2016, 3:26pm

Mihany has given David Hayes a milestone Melbourne Cup carnival victory with an all-the-way win at Flemington.

In taking out the 3AW Talking Melbourne Mile on Thursday, Mihany gave Hayes his 50th carnival victory.

Ridden by apprentice Regan Bayliss, Mihany ($8.50) scored by 3-1/4 lengths from Marwood ($7.50) with Pay Up Bro ($4.60) a neck away third.

Hayes took over as head of Lindsay Park in 1990 from his father Colin and had immediate success, registering six winners on Derby day at his first carnival.

With a 10-year gap when training in Hong Kong, Hayes this year is at his 16th carnival.

"I'm thrilled with the milestone," Hayes said.

"It's tough to win at this carnival because all of Australia comes to win here."
