Brian Cox guilty of steroid charges

Wednesday 2 November 2016, 2:28pm

Trainer Brian Cox faces a mandatory two-year ban after being found guilty of eight of 13 charges relating to the administration of a banned anabolic androgenic steroid to horses in his care.

Robert Fielding, the Wodonga trainer's vet, was also found guilty of two charges over his conduct in the matter.

The Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board delivered its findings on Wednesday and will hear submissions on penalty on November 15.

The charges arose after a race day inspection of Cox's stable in March when stewards found two containers labelled Ulcerguard in the trainer's fridge.

After analysis, the contents of one of the containers was found to be Nitrotain, a product on the banned list for horses.

The mandatory penalty for administering anabolic steroids caem into effect on May 1, 2014.

Cox was also found guilty of giving misleading evidence to stewards by putting forward several different scenarios including that he did not know how it got there; the container could have been planted; that it was an oversight it was in the fridge.

Fielding was found guilty of dishonest or improper action or practice that could have led to a breach of the rules.
