McEvoy's Dad watches on in second Cup win

Tuesday 1 November 2016, 5:44pm

Kerrin McEvoy's father Phillip has described watching his son's second Melbourne Cup win as probably more exciting than his first on Brew 16 years ago.

Kerrin McEvoy guided Almandin to a narrow win in Tuesday's Cup at Flemington after a stirring battle with Irish horse Heartbreak City over the final 200m.

"It was probably more exciting that one, than Brew I think," Mr McEvoy said.

"When we came here with Brew we probably just took it on board and just hoped that he could ride a winner in the Melbourne Cup.

"And here today I really thought this horse could probably win today. I thought he was prepared right and Kerrin had a bit of time for the horse. Kerrin's been riding so well lately.

"And I just really thought he was a great chance. It was just a great ride that got him there today. It was a close finish, but that's what happens in racing."

McEvoy's win on Almandin comes a year after his sister-in-law Michelle Payne created history when she became the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup on Prince Of Penzance.

McEvoy is married to Payne's sister Cathy who is expecting their fourth child soon.

"Unbelievable. It's a family thing. Paynes last year, McEvoys this year," Mr McEvoy said.

"You wouldn't believe it. I just saw Michelle run the phone out and Cathy is on the phone talking to Kerrin. How good was that."
