Qld apprentices to appeal suspensions

Monday 17 October 2016, 11:15am

A date will be set this week for appeals by apprentices Bridget Grylls and Josh Oliver against their one-month suspensions on handling charges.

The appeals will be the first of their kind before the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission which replaced the Racing Disciplinary Board in July.

Stewards have suspended two other jockeys in the past 18 months on the same charges but the RDB upheld their appeals.

The two apprentices were suspended last month after an inquiry into their rides on Black Jag (Oliver) and Ranked (Grylls) in the Open Hcp (2200m) at Doomben on September 10.

The two horses were a long way in front in the middle stages of the race before weakening in the straight.

Ranked finished sixth of the seven runners, 12 lengths from the winner, with Black Jag another five lengths away.

Stewards believed the apprentices had set too fast a pace in the race and breached the rule which covers giving their mounts every chance in a race.

Both pleaded not guilty and argued there had been nothing wrong with the sectional times and their mounts had pulled up with injury problems.

The suspensions were to commence on September 29 but both apprentices appealed and were granted stays of proceedings.
