Melham fined $1200 over whip use

Saturday 6 October 2012, 6:44pm

Jockey Ben Melham has been fined a total of $1200 for five breaches of rules related to use of the whip at Flemington on Saturday.

Stewards found Melham had used the whip excessively or incorrectly on Excitable Boy in race one, Escado in race two, Happy Trails in race seven and twice on Bel Sprinter in race eight.

None of the horses finished in a place and stewards reported Bel Sprinter had displayed a slower than normal recovery rate after finishing fourth in the Gilgai Stakes.

The fines are among the highest imposed in Melbourne for breaches of whip rules.
