Tasmania's star two-year-old wins again

Wednesday 27 February 2013, 4:17pm

Tasmania's star two-year-old Grand Tycoon stretched his unbeaten winning sequence to six-from-six with the best victory of his career at Mowbray on Wednesday.

And in doing so, he finally earned a spell in the paddock that has been waiting for him for three months.

Grand Tycoon ($3.40) survived in a slogging battle in the Listed Gold Sovereign Stakes (1200m), beating Geegees Velvet by a half neck with a half length to Gee Gee Style in third.

At a time when it seems every state should have an unbeaten galloper, Grand Tycoon is the junior member of a band led by Black Caviar in Victoria and Barakey in Western Australia.

In the opinion of his trainer Barry Campbell, Grand Tycoon is worthy of inclusion in the group.

"He keeps stepping up and doing the job," Campbell said.

"I've been on the point of sending him for a spell a few times ... they started getting his paddock ready for him three months ago."

In each of his past three wins, Grand Tycoon has beaten Wednesday's runner-up Geegees Velvet into second place, leaving his trainer John Luttrell as pleased as anyone that he is finally having a rest.

"I thought we had him today, now we'll be the one to beat," he said.
