Red Tracer switch pays off in WFA Premiere

Saturday 6 October 2012, 6:38pm

Chris Waller's decision to keep Red Tracer away from More Joyous in the Golden Pendant a week ago proved a winning one for the mare who claimed the Group Two Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.

Rain Affair was sent out the $2.80 favourite to redeem his reputation in the weight-for-age sprint but after leading into the straight, he compounded as the rest of the field came at him.

Satin Shoes ($10) took the lead inside the 200m but Red Tracer ($6.50) had the momentum and went past her to win by a length in a slick 1:09.67.

She was premier trainer Waller's only winner for the day on which his best of the four Group One results was Kelinni's second to the Gai Waterhouse-trained Glencadam Gold in the Metropolitan.

"All the horses ran well so I'm not disappointed," Waller said.

"This mare is great fresh. She was ready to go last week over 1400 metres but I didn't want to run her against More Joyous.

"She likes wet tracks and although she didn't get one today she showed how good she is fresh.

"She's probably the best Group Two horse in Australia."

Having said that, Waller will target the Group One Myer Classic for mares at Flemington with Red Tracer who has won nine of her 20 starts.

Trainer Joe Pride said Rain Affair, who finished eighth of the 10 runners, would now be spelled.

"We'll put him out and give him a good break," Pride said.
