Barakey passed to run in Newmarket Hcp

Wednesday 27 February 2013, 3:19pm

Perth sprinter Barakey has been cleared for a Newmarket Handicap start after completing a special gallop in front of stewards at Caulfield on Wednesday.

Stewards ordered Barakey to line up under jump-out conditions after he was scratched at the barriers as favourite in last Saturday's Group One Oakleigh Plate.

The 1100m sprint at Caulfield was meant to be Barakey's first start on the eastern seaboard after winning 11 from 11 in the west, including the Group One Winterbottom Stakes.

He will now go first-up into the Group One Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on Saturday week.

The five-year-old will be taken to Flemington on Tuesday morning for a familiarisation workout over the famous the straight course.

Trainer Jim Taylor was pleased with Barakey's hit-out on Wednesday.

"He went in and stood up perfectly before jumping well and he had a good hit-out over about 700 metres, beating the rest of them easily," Taylor told www.racingvictoria.net.au.

"He was nice and settled. The only two times he has been a problem in the gates has been when another horse has gone off so I didn't think there would be any problem here this morning."

Barakey is on the second line of betting for the Newmarket behind the Peter Moody-trained Moment Of Change.
