Two-year-olds to step out at Flemington

Expensive filly Madeenaty is the early favourite for Melbourne's first two-year-old race of the season at Flemington.

Seeing the new season juveniles step out under race conditions for the first time is always intriguing, and Sunday's Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m) kicks off 2016/17.

Sydney hosts its first juvenile races on Saturday with the Breeders' Plate for colts and geldings and Gimcrack Stakes for fillies at Randwick.

The Lindsay Park stable of trainers David and Ben Hayes and Tom Daberning have two youngsters in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes including Madeenaty who is by Exceed And Excel out of multiple Group Two-winning mare and Group One placegetter Set For Fame.

Madeenaty fetched $775,000 at this year's Magic Millions sale on the Gold Coast.

The TAB has her at $4 for Sunday's race ahead of the Greg Eurell-trained colt Redcore, a half-brother to Grafton Cup winner Rednav.

The Ciaron Maher-trained Purrealist filly Purrhaps is at $6.50.

Along with Madeenaty, the Hayes-Dabernig stable has All American colt American Genius in the race who finished fourth in a recent Cranbourne trial.

"A lovely horse, and the further he goes the better he'll be," David Hayes said in his weekly stable update.

"He's a query at the 1000 metres, but not a query on his ability. I really like him."

Madeenaty has barrier one for the straight-track race and has trialled well at Flemington in a couple of jump-outs including when second down the straight last Friday behind Domination, who is scratched from the race, when she appeared to have something in hand.

"If the inside is the place to be, she'll run well," Hayes said.

"Her trials have been really good. She's a promising filly.

"It's all just so hard to judge. I think there's a lot of high hopes going into this race from the other stables."
