First runner for Michelle Payne at Stawell

Friday 30 September 2016, 2:04pm

Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne is set to have her first runner as a trainer with New Zealand filly Queen Of Zealand an acceptor in a maiden race at Stawell.

Payne will ride the filly in Tuesday's 1300m-race as she begins a new phase of her career having recently been granted a dual trainer/jockey licence in Victoria

Stakes-placed in New Zealand, Queen Of Zealand joined Payne's small team of horses this week and the filly holds a VRC Oaks nomination.

Queen Of Zealand has had two starts, running third at her most recent behind It's Time For Magic and La Luna Rossa who franked the form of the Listed race at Hastings when she ran second in last Saturday's Thousand Guineas Prelude.

Payne created history when she became the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup last spring aboard Prince Of Penzance.

She suffered a career threatening injury in a race fall at Mildura in May and needed pancreatic surgery.

Payne made her return to race riding earlier this month and claimed the first winner of her comeback in last Sunday's Coleraine Cup aboard the Luke Oliver-trained Birds Of Tokyo.

Payne was one of three people to be granted the first dual trainer/jockey licences in Victoria meaning she can ride horses she trains in races.
