Heartbreak City set for Melbourne Cup tilt

Thursday 29 September 2016, 12:30am

Heartbreak City is to be prepared for the Melbourne Cup after Thoroughbred Bloodstock Australia bought an interest in the Irish-trained Ebor winner.

Original owners, Here For The Craic Partnership, have retained an interest in the six-year-old who will continue to be trained by his current handler Tony Martin.

Heartbreak City was allotted 48.5kg for the Flemington showpiece on November 1, when the new part-owners will hope to win the showpiece event for the first time after near-misses with Jakkalberry (third in 2012) and Dandino (fifth in 2013).

"An Australian group have got involved, I don't know what percentage, but the original men are still very much there," said Martin.

"He was in the Cesarewitch, he was in a lot of things, but the intention is to set him qualified for quarantine and send him for the Melbourne Cup.

"It's a handicap. He's in off a racing weight and he has a right to be there."

Martin added: "As for who will ride him, the people out there have put forward about six names in the frame. There's nothing confirmed. We'll be listening to their advice and see how we go.

"Our men are still very much involved. The intention is to go to Melbourne and take it from there."
