First races for new season's 2yos

Monday 26 September 2016, 3:24pm

If the best guide to Sydney's first two-year-old races of the season is the barrier trials, Condor Heroes should have the Breeders' Plate sewn up.

The Gerald Ryan-trained colt stood out at last week's official trials with his 9-1/4 length win, but more importantly recorded the fastest 850 metres of the 12 heats at Randwick, clocking 50.52 seconds.

He is among 16 nominations for the Breeders's Plate as is Godolphin colt Piracy, one of just two other youngsters to break 52s at the trials.

"I wasn't surprised he won his trial but I was surprised at how much he won it by," Ryan said.

"But he ran the time which says he's pretty good.

"He's a nice strong colt and I hope he can reproduce it on race day."

Ryan won the Breeders' Plate in 2005 with Snitzel who he regards as probably the best he has trained.

Snitzel is now a champion sire and Ryan has many of his progeny but none ready for Saturday's race.

Condor Heroes is by Not A Single Doubt, who like Snitzel, stands at Arrowfield Stud.

The Ryan-trained Snitzel colt Chauffeur was a close second in his trial to Breeders' Plate nomination, the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Invader, also by Snitzel.

Chauffeur, the $1.6 million sale topper at this year's Magic Millions sale, has gone for a break and will be aimed at the sales-related race at the Gold Coast in January.

Ryan has also entered two fillies in the Gimcrack Stakes, Didn't Mention It and Zegota.

Didn't Mention It finished third in her trial which was won by Jorda, the other two-year-old to better the 52s mark, while Zegota was fourth in her heat.

"They are both nice fillies and I will monitor them over the next coulpe of days," Ryan said.

"But they could both run."
