Veteran trainers outed on cruelty charges

Thursday 22 September 2016, 7:04pm

Two veteran NSW country trainers have been banned on animal cruelty charges.

Jim Delaney and Cliff Bashford appeared before Racing NSW stewards on Thursday over the treatment given to an unraced two-year-old filly which had a tendon injury.

The filly was euthanased on June 17 after being treated with a substance that proved toxic.

Delaney was found guilty of two charges: 1 - committing and/or commissioning an act of cruelty and 2 - failing to take reasonable steps to alleviate pain inflicted upon a horse and failing to provide the necessary veterinary treatment where such treatment was necessary for a horse.

He received respective disqualifications of five years and three years to be served concurrently.

Bashford has handed a three-year- ban on the charge of committing and/or commissioning an act of cruelty and a further two years being a party to Delaney's second offence with both penalties also to be served concurrently.
