Bar rises again for unbeaten Barthelona

Saturday 17 September 2016, 1:44pm

Barthelona will be given his chance at stakes level after maintaining his unbeaten record at Caulfield.

After victories at Bendigo and at midweek city level at Sandown, Barthelona graduated to Saturday three-year-old company with victory in the Telstra Phoneworlds Supports The Alfred Foundation Plate.

Ridden by Ryan Maloney, Barthelona was sent off the $4.20 favourite before scoring by a long head from Modern Wonder ($7) with Blue Tycoon ($7.50) a short half-head away third.

Trainer Mike Moroney said Barthelona was likely to head to the Group Three Blue Sapphire Stakes at Caulfield next month.

"I think he deserves a chance at a stakes race and then see where we end up," Moroney said.

"We keep raising the bar and he keeps doing it.

"The Blue Sapphire will be next and if he happened to win that then possibly the (Group One) Coolmore Stakes after that."

Moroney held concerns for the half-brother to Group One-winning sprinter Under The Louvre racing on the tighter Caulfield circuit and jumping from the outside gate.

Maloney described Barthelona as almost the perfect racehorse.

The jockey, who has previously been associated with Under The Louvre, said Barthelona does everything you want him to do.

"He switches off midrace and has a good turn off foot," Maloney said.

"They haven't raised the bar too high yet and there's good improvement still to come."
