Wicklow Brave books Melbourne Cup ticket

Monday 12 September 2016, 6:38am

Wicklow Brave has upset Order Of St George to win the Irish St Leger and book his ticket to the Melbourne Cup.

Trained by Willie Mullins who brought Max Dynamite to Australia last year to run second in the Cup, Wicklow Brave was at 11-1 with Order Of St George the 1-7 favourite at the Curragh.

Order Of St George tried to catch Wicklow Brave as he bowled along in front under Frankie Dettori but was still half a length behind on the post.

Mullins confirmed the Flemington showpiece was top of his agenda.

"Hopefully it will be the Melbourne Cup next. That has been the plan all year as the pace and the ground will suit," Mullins said.

"We have been holding him up all our lives and he often doesn't produce what it looks like he will."

The TAB has shortened Wicklow Brave to $17 equal favourite for the Melbourne Cup on November 1 alongside Order Of St George and Signoff.
