Maybe Discreet heads for Thousand Guineas

Saturday 6 October 2012, 5:21pm

South Australian filly Maybe Discreet zeroed in on the Thousand Guineas after notching a brave win in the Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes (1610m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Trained by Phillip Stokes, Maybe Discreet ($5) capitalised on her victory at Morphettville three weeks ago when she beat Members Joy ($10) by a short half-head.

The highly-rated $3.10 favourite Commanding Jewel was third, a neck further back.

Stable representative Kate McManmon said she was confident Maybe Discreet would cope with a step up in distance.

"We always had a high opinion of this filly and we knew when she stepped up to a mile that she'd really show her game," she said.

"We're en-route now for the (Thousand) Guineas and hopefully she'll step up for that now.

"We set her off over 1100 metres this prep because she has got a turn of foot.

"She had a run at Moonee Valley five weeks ago and ran a really good race then we brought her back to Morphettville and put the blinkers on and she's just a different horse with them."

Jockey Luke Nolen overcame barrier 16 and was impressed with the run.

"She showed a bit of determination to fight them off at the furlong and all and all I thought the effort was very good," Nolan said.

He said the filly would be well suited by Caulfield.

Nolan will again be aboard Maybe Discreet in the Group One Thousand Guineas (1600m) on October 17.
