Great Esteem wins Listed Heatherlie Stakes

Saturday 27 August 2016, 6:09pm

A well-judged front-running ride from Katelyn Mallyon has helped Great Esteem to victory in the Heatherlie Stakes at Caulfield.

Great Esteem, having his fourth start since being transferred to Caulfield trainer Stuart Webb, made it back-to-back wins on his new home track after leading all the way in a 1600m race two weeks earlier.

Mallyon was able to dictate terms in front on six-year-old Great Esteem ($11) and the backmarkers didn't get into the race as Great Esteem held Tom Melbourne by 1-1/4 lengths on the line with Longeron another 1-3/4 lengths away third.

Great Esteem came to Webb's stable as a tried older horse and the trainer believes a change of environment, blinkers, and schooling over jumps has helped the gelding.

"He actually came to us as a jumper and I don't know if he's trying to save his (flat racing) career at the moment by doing this, but he's a terrific jumper," Webb said.

Webb said Great Esteem had gone over some jumps a few times this week.

"It's really changed him around," he said.

Great Esteem races in the colours worn by Yosei whom Webb trained to win three Group One races.
