Banks' Rosehill victory soured by ban

Saturday 27 August 2016, 1:33pm

A rare city winner for Andrew Banks has been soured by a six-meeting careless riding suspension.

Banks won aboard Mandalong Kiss in a 2000m benchmark race at Rosehill on Saturday, but was handed a ban for causing interference when crossing from the widest barrier after the start.

The horse's 94-year-old owner-breeder Ray Pisaturo's decision to have a rare day off from the races cost him the opportunity to see the upset victory.

Pisaturo sent trainer Gary Nickson a text message, saying he would watch Mandalong Kiss from his home.

"He always comes so you wouldn't believe it," Nickson said.

"I'll go via the farm and go and see him on the way home - he'll be rapt."

Mandalong Kiss benefitted from a blistering pace, set by Erika's jockey Tommy Berry who took off mid-race, engaging in a battle for the lead with Northern Journey under Deanne Panya.

The mare defied her $21 starting price to win by a half length from Birds Of Tokyo ($4.60) with My Giuliano ($3.70) third.

Banks repaid Nickson's faith in him, winning for the stable that backed him after his return from a four-year disqualification last year.

Apprentice rider Jess Payne was given a $500 fine for excessive whip use on Birds Of Tokyo.
