Jungle Edge proves Darren Gauci right

Wednesday 24 August 2016, 5:19pm

Trainer Mick Bell has heeded the advice of Darren Gauci with a rise in distance for Jungle Edge.

The six-year-old stepped up to 1400m at Sandown on Wednesday to take out the Schweppes Handicap.

A winner over 1200m at Sandown on June 27, Jungle Edge then rose in grade for a brave second to Voodoo Lad in the Regal Roller Stakes at Caulfield on August 13.

Gauci rode the gelding at Caulfield outing and suggested to Bell Jungle Edge would appreciate 1400m.

Bell had Jungle Edge in a 1200m race at Moonee Valley last Saturday but decided to keep the gelding for Sandown.

Ridden by Regan Bayliss, Jungle Edge ($5) scored by 2-1/4 lengths from the $2.60 favourite Marwood with Oscar's My Mate Pa ($3.60) in third place.

"He's quite a fast horse as he's shown in his sprint races," Bell said.

"But I've got to thank Darren Gauci. He said he thought he would be suited to 1400 metres and sometimes you've just got to listen to someone like that."

Jungle Edge has been a model of consistency with the gelding notching two wins and three minor placings from his past five starts.

"I don't do much with him," Bell said.

"He gets ridden every third day and goes for a swim every day and he's just loving it.

"When he comes to the races it's just like a gallop. He's not getting hammered and the horse seems to thrive on it."
