Sweet Sherry scored first-up for new yard

Saturday 20 August 2016, 3:38pm

Co-trainer Troy Corstens says Sweet Sherry is way short of her top despite a narrow first-up win at Moonee Valley.

Having her first start for Corstens, Sweet Sherry ($6.50) took out the Cleanaway Plate by a half-head from Tan Tat Beauty ($9).

Mowtown Lil ($5) ran on to finish third, 1-1/4 lengths away.

"She's got a stack of ability and it's a little bit scary because I know how much more improvement there is to come," Corstens said.

"If you look at her today she just doesn't look right in the coat.

"I think she's about three or four weeks off from where she needs to be."

Sweet Sherry ran seventh in the Golden Slipper for Brent Stanley who shortly after was disqualified for nine months over the sale of Equita to Hong Kong.

Both Corstens and rider Steven Arnold think the filly will get out further than the 1200m she was successful over on Saturday.

Sweet Sherry is entered in the Golden Rose at Rosehill on September 10 which Corstens said was not out of the question but the Atlantic Jewel Stakes at Moonee Valley on September 3 was likely to be her next start.

Corstens said the campaign didn't start with any definite plans.

"We've spoken about the Thousand Guineas and it would be nice to get her out to the mile," Corstens said.

"Even though she's just been in those sprinting races I don't think it will stop her getting out in trip."
