Willie Mullins eyes Melbourne with Warrior

Monday 15 August 2016, 6:12am

Irish trainer Willie Mullins is hoping to continue the incredible story of Clondaw Warrior with a run in the Melbourne Cup.

The nine-year-old came up just short in an ambitious tilt to land the Galway Hurdle and American St Leger in the space of just three weeks.

Now Mullins is eyeing up a trip to Australia for the Cup he came close to winning last year when Max Dynamite ran second to Prince Of Penzance.

"He looked fantastic today even with all his travels this year," Mullins said.

"When he's closing on the Belmont Gold Cup winner (Da Big Hoss) that has to mean he's good enough to go Melbourne.

"He might have one more run (in England or Ireland). We'll see. He'll have to improve a little in the weights to get into the race, but we'd love to go if we can."

Connections of the Da Big Hoss have also expressed interest in the Melbourne Cup but owner Harvey Diamond says it would need to be financially viable.

Diamond told twinspires.com one idea was to syndicate the horse with a view to leaving him in Australia to race and possibly stand at stud.
