Can Capitalist beat Golden Slipper curse?

Thursday 11 August 2016, 5:14pm

All eyes will be on Capitalist when the colt tries to break the curse that has plagued Golden Slipper winners of the last 15 years.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt is the odds-on favourite for the Group Three San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday, his first start since winning the Slipper on the same track in March.

It's been hit-and-miss for star juveniles after Slipper success.

The three winners before Capitalist - Vancouver (2015), Mossfun (2014) and Overreach (2013) - never won another race and have all been retired to stud.

Calaway Gal (2002), Polar Success (2003), Stratum (2005) and his daughter Crystal Lily (2010) also failed to deliver a post-Slipper win.

And who could forget the unlucky Phelan Ready (2009), who waited five years for another win and retired as a eight-year-old with only four wins from 59 starts.

But it's not all doom and gloom.

Four of champion mare Miss Finland's (2006) five elite level wins came after she turned three.

Pierro (2012) won the two-year-old triple crown and Sebring (2008) won two legs.

Pierro returned in the spring with a first-up win in the Run To The Rose before stamping himself as a champion in the autumn as a dual-Group One winner at three.

Sebring didn't race as a three-year-old but has starred in the breeding barn, producing versatile champion Criterion and Dissident, the 2014-15 horse of the year.

Peter Snowden's first Slipper winner Sepoy (2011) kicked off his spring season as a three-year-old with five consecutive stakes wins including two Group Ones.
