Beside You on Highway to better races

Monday 8 August 2016, 3:11pm

Barry Ratcliff may have the honour of being the first trainer to nominate the same horse for Group and Highway races on the same day.

The Kempsey trainer has Beside You entered in the Group Three San Domenico Stakes and the Highway Handicap at Rosehill on Saturday, both over 1100 metres.

But Ratcliff is almost certain his filly will line up in the Highway for country-trained horses.

"We're 99 per cent sure we're going to go to the Highway and give her a crack at the title later on," Ratcliff said.

While her chance to win a better race is likely to be after Saturday, Ratcliff has no doubt about Beside You's talent.

"When I put her down on the home track she just blows them away and you think wow - how good is she?" he said.

Ratcliff said the unbeaten filly still had a lot to learn.

She scored a strong win at Coffs Harbour last start despite jumping slowly out of the gates and over-racing at her second start in a class one race on July 24.

"She's getting more sensible every day," Ratcliff said.

The best of eight horses he has in work, Beside You's presence in his stable is a turnaround in luck.

Langfibian was Ratcliff's finest horse, a mare who won 18 races and almost $240,000 prize money for her owner-trainer.

After three unsuccessful attempts breeding her with Ready's Image, Ratcliff sold her at a broodmare sale.

The first foal she produced after the sale was coincidentally by Ready's Image, Flash Fibian who was runner-up in the Group Three Black Opal Stakes in March.

Lincoln Farm owner Nick Posa kept the luckless Ratcliff in mind when he bred Beside You, another Ready's Image filly.

"He wanted nothing out of it to start with. He just wanted her back to breed with her after I was finished with her," Ratcliff said.

Ratcliff realised her talent and insisted Posa keep a 20 per cent share, with the pair now racing the filly together.

"It's hard to get a good one like that but she'll do me for a while," Ratcliff said.

Beside You is set to be a rare city runner for Ratcliff and will also give jockey Serg Lisnyy a rare chance to get back in the Sydney winner's list.
