Mares' races drying up for Savannah Moon

Friday 5 August 2016, 12:50pm

Bendigo trainer Rod Symons is resigned to Savannah Moon taking on the males again after she tackles mares' grade at Flemington.

A last-start winner, Savannah Moon meets similar opposition in the VRC Member Paul Tamburro Handicap (2000m) on Saturday.

Savannah Moon defeated last week's Caulfield winner Khutulun in a mares' race over 1800m on July 23 and they meet on the same weight terms.

"She's well weighted once again and the bit of give in the ground suits," Symons said.

"We're confident she'll run equally well again."

Savannah Moon has been a consistent performer this campaign with Symons taking advantage of mares' races over a bit of ground in town.

In coming months she will have to take on male company again with Symons saying there were no suitable mares' races for Savannah Moon.

"The 2000 metre races for mares are all but over so she'll have to go back to open class while she's holding up," he said.

Symons says he won't be aiming too high but if the wet winter continues he will look towards the softer country Cups in the spring.

Savannah Moon contested last year's Bendigo Cup, finishing ninth to The Offer.

"We tried her in the Bendigo Cup last year because a lot of the owners are Bendigo people but she was probably a bit out of her depth," he said.

"She was a mile away from the higher rated horses but was only getting four or five kilos off them.

"If we get a wet spring then those country Cups in the Wimmera might suit her.

"She's raced consistently over the last few months and we'll just keep going with her while there's give in the ground."
