Asante makes race return from motherhood

Wednesday 3 August 2016, 4:45pm

A mare who has had a foal is set to make a racetrack reappearance at Flemington.

Five-year-old Asante will be having her second race outing when she lines up in the VRC Member Paul Tamburro Handicap (2000m) on Saturday.

Since her only start at Sale a little less than two years ago, Asante has been to stud where she produced a filly by Crowded House in 2015.

Asante has returned to Pat Carey at Mornington where she has been in work for around six weeks after doing pre-training in West Australia.

"She's been going all right and she's had one local trial," Carey said.

"It's a small field, she's a staying bred mare that's had a solid preparation."

Asante was scratched from a maiden race at Sale on Wednesday because of the heavy track.

It is unusual for mares to return to racing after foaling although two from a Victorian stable contested the same race at Cranbourne in March.

Alma Yulanda and Gay Skier, prepared by Andrew Sawden, each had foals in 2013 before coming back to the racetrack in 2015.

Gay Skier is still a maiden after 14 starts while Alma Yulanda has one win from six starts.

Asante will be joined at Flemington by stablemate Spur On Gold in the VRC Member Keli Sponner Handicap.

Spur On Gold will be having his first start since running third to Bold Spinner and Master Of Arts over 2400m at Sandown in May.

"He's a winner at 1200 metres before and I thought his form over ground was excellent before we decided to give him a break," Carey said.

"He's still a ratings graded stayer so we'll work him through the grades and see where he gets to."
